Use sloped area for roofs

Use the size you are buying. Panels are commonly sold at a nominal size that is very slightly undersized, which helps them fit on a framing module with a small gap between them.

Sheathing is usually staggered across the framing, which produces offcuts at the end of each row. Some of those start the next row; some do not.

Formula
Panels = area(sq ft) / (panel width(ft) x panel length(ft))
An area ratio. It does not account for a specific stagger pattern or for offcuts that cannot be reused.
Worked example
An 800 square foot roof deck using 4 by 8 foot panels

The deck takes 25 panels on an area basis. In practice the staggered layout and cuts at hips and valleys mean ordering somewhat more.
Worked examples
A subfloor
A 12 by 14 foot room subfloored with 4 by 8 foot panels
- 1Floor area: 12 x 14 = 168 square feet.
- 2Panels: 168 / 32 = 5.25.
- 3Round up: 6 panels.
Six panels cover the floor on an area basis, with a quarter panel of slack. A staggered layout across joists may still need a seventh depending on how the joints fall.
Why the roof footprint is the wrong number
A 1,500 square foot footprint at a 6/12 pitch, sheathed in 4 by 8 panels
- 1Pitch multiplier: sqrt(12^2 + 6^2) / 12 = 1.118.
- 2Sloped area: 1,500 x 1.118 = 1,677 square feet.
- 3Panels using sloped area: 1,677 / 32 = 52.4, so 53.
- 4Panels using footprint by mistake: 1,500 / 32 = 46.9, so 47.
Using the flat footprint would under-order by six panels, about 11 percent. The steeper the roof, the larger the error.
Floors, walls, and roofs are measured differently
A subfloor is the simplest case: measure the room, and that is the area. Walls are the perimeter times the height, minus any large openings you choose to subtract.
Roof decks are where estimates most often go wrong, because the obvious measurement is the building footprint and the sheathing does not lie flat. A sloped plane is always larger than the footprint beneath it, by a factor that grows with the pitch.
The example above shows a 6/12 pitch adding about 12 percent to the area. A 12/12 pitch adds about 41 percent. Working from the footprint on a steep roof will under-order badly, so calculate the sloped area first.
Nominal size and the gap between panels
Structural panels are commonly manufactured very slightly under their nominal size. That is deliberate: it lets a run of panels land on a framing module while leaving a small gap between each one for expansion.
For estimating purposes the nominal size is what to use, since the difference is a fraction of an inch and the gap absorbs it. What matters more is that the panel size you enter is the one you are buying, since panel dimensions do vary between products.
Whether panels should be gapped, how they should be fastened, and which thickness is right for a given framing spacing are specification and code matters. They belong to your plan rather than to this calculator.
Stagger patterns and why counts run over
Sheathing is normally laid with staggered joints, so the end joints in one row do not line up with those in the next. That is a structural detail, not an aesthetic one, and it changes how offcuts fall.
In a staggered layout, the offcut from the end of one row often starts the next, which is efficient. But it only works when the offcut is long enough to reach a framing member, and when it is not, the piece is scrap.
The result is that plywood counts run over the theoretical figure more often than they run under it. On a plain rectangle the overrun is small. On a roof with hips, valleys, or dormers it can be substantial, since every one of those creates angled cuts that produce unusable remnants.
Common mistakes
Where panel counts go wrong:
- Using the roof footprint instead of the sloped area, which under-orders on every pitched roof.
- Forgetting that steeper pitches magnify the difference.
- Treating an area ratio as a stagger layout on a cut-up roof.
- Mixing thicknesses across floor, wall, and roof into a single count.
- Subtracting every opening in a wall while ignoring the offcuts cutting around them creates.
- Ordering the exact figure on a roof with hips, valleys, or dormers.

Areas use the standard area formulas, counts divide an area by the size of one unit, and unit conversions use exact factors: 12 inches to a foot, 9 square feet to a square yard, and 100 square feet to a roofing square.

- How many sheets of plywood do I need?
- Divide the area by the panel area. An 800 square foot deck in 4 by 8 foot panels is 25 panels exactly. For a sloped roof, use the sloped area rather than the footprint.
- How many sheets of plywood for a 12 x 12 room?
- A 12 by 12 foot floor is 144 square feet, which is 4.5 panels at 4 by 8 feet, so 5 panels. A staggered layout across the joists may need a sixth depending on where the joints land.
- Do I use the roof footprint or the sloped area?
- The sloped area, always. A 6/12 pitch adds about 12 percent to the footprint and a 12/12 pitch adds about 41 percent. Using the footprint under-orders every pitched roof.
- Is OSB calculated the same way as plywood?
- Yes. The arithmetic depends only on the panel size, so the same calculation applies. Which material and thickness suit a given application is a specification question.

- What thickness should I use?
- This calculator does not decide that. Thickness depends on the framing span, the loads, and local code, so take it from your drawings or your building department.
