How we select formulas
We use standard, widely accepted formulas for volume and unit conversion. Each calculator states the exact formula it applies so you can verify the result by hand.
How we verify conversions
Unit conversions use exact factors. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet, one cubic foot equals 1,728 cubic inches, and one cubic yard equals 46,656 cubic inches. These factors are covered by automated tests so they cannot drift.
How densities and bag yields are sourced
Material density, coverage, and bag yield vary by product and supplier. We treat these as factual claims that must be sourced from a named reference and reviewed before publication. Until a value is verified, it is not shown in any result.
How rounding is handled
Calculations run at full precision and only round for display. Volumes are shown to a sensible number of decimal places, and bag counts are rounded up to whole bags because partial bags cannot be purchased.
How waste percentages are disclosed
Where a waste allowance is offered, it is optional and reported as a separate line so you can see the base estimate and the adjusted estimate side by side.
Page review process
Every published page records the date it was last reviewed. When a formula or sourced value changes, we update the page, refresh its review date, and update the relevant tests.
Planning estimate disclaimer
Results are planning estimates intended to help you order with confidence. Site conditions, compaction, and product variation affect real quantities, so always confirm with your supplier before ordering.
