YardCalc Help

Short, practical answers to the questions that come up most when estimating material. If something is still unclear, contact us and we will improve the guidance.

How to choose the correct calculator

Pick the tool that matches your task. To estimate how much material a project needs, use the cubic yard calculator. To switch between units you already have, use a conversion tool such as cubic feet to cubic yards or cubic yards to cubic feet. The calculator index lists every tool.

How to enter units

Each measurement field has its own unit selector. Set the unit to match how you measured, such as feet, inches, yards, or meters. You do not need to convert by hand. The calculator normalizes everything before it works out the volume.

Area versus volume, and why depth is required

Area covers length and width only. Volume adds depth, which is what bulk material is sold by. That is why a project always needs a depth or thickness before you can find cubic yards. Without depth, you only have a flat area.

How decimal results work

Conversions and geometry often produce decimals. Keep the full decimal value while you plan, and round only when you are ready to order. Rounding up is usually safer so you do not run short.

How the waste allowance works

The waste allowance adds a percentage on top of the base volume to cover spillage, compaction, and small measurement errors. It is optional, and the right amount depends on your material and project. The calculator shows the base and adjusted volumes separately.

How optional cost estimates work

Cost is based only on the price you enter. Add a price per cubic yard, cubic foot, or cubic meter, plus any delivery or fixed fees. YardCalc does not use market prices, so the estimate reflects your own numbers.

Copy, share, reset, and print

The cubic yard calculator can copy the result or the full calculation, share a link that reloads your inputs, reset to a clean state, and print a clean estimate. Sharing uses a link only and stores nothing about you.

Why material weight can vary

The same volume of two materials can weigh very different amounts, because weight depends on density and moisture. YardCalc shows weight only when a reviewed, sourced density is available, so it is not offered for every material yet.

Confirm orders with your supplier

Treat every result as a planning estimate. Suppliers sell in set increments, and site conditions change real quantities. Confirm the final amount before you buy. See the calculator disclaimer for details, and the methodology for how the math is verified.
