Work out the wall area
Add the lengths of all the walls to get the perimeter, then multiply by the ceiling height. Enter that as a known area, or add each wall as its own section if the heights differ.

If you are boarding the ceiling too, add it as another section using the room length and width.

Decide about openings
Large openings are worth subtracting. Small ones are often left in, because cutting around them wastes roughly what they save. Either is fine as long as you know which you did.

Enter the sheet size
Use the sheet size you are actually buying. Longer sheets cover the same area with fewer joints, which matters more for the finishing work than for the sheet count.

Add an allowance and price it
Add a percentage for offcuts that cannot be reused, then enter your price per sheet for an estimated total.
Formula
Sheets = total area(sq ft) / (sheet width(ft) x sheet length(ft))
This is an area ratio. It assumes offcuts are usable elsewhere, which a real layout does not always allow.
Worked example
A room 12 by 14 feet with an 8 foot ceiling, boarding the walls and the ceiling, using 4 by 8 foot sheets
- 1Perimeter: 2 x (12 + 14) = 52 feet.
- 2Wall area: 52 x 8 = 416 square feet.
- 3Ceiling area: 12 x 14 = 168 square feet.
- 4Total area: 416 + 168 = 584 square feet.
- 5Sheets: 584 / (4 x 8) = 18.25, which rounds up to 19.
The room takes 19 sheets on an area basis, before any allowance for unusable offcuts.
Worked examples
The same room with longer sheets
The same 584 square feet using 4 by 12 foot sheets
- 1Sheet area: 4 x 12 = 48 square feet.
- 2Sheets: 584 / 48 = 12.17, which rounds up to 13.
- 3Compared with 19 sheets at 4 by 8.
Longer sheets mean six fewer pieces to handle and, more importantly, fewer butt joints to tape and finish across an 8 foot wall.
Subtracting the openings
The same room with a 3 by 7 foot door and two 3 by 4 foot windows
- 1Door: 3 x 7 = 21 square feet.
- 2Windows: 2 x (3 x 4) = 24 square feet.
- 3Net area: 584 - 45 = 539 square feet.
- 4Sheets: 539 / 32 = 16.84, which rounds up to 17.
Subtracting the openings saves two sheets. Many finishers do not subtract small openings, because cutting around them produces offcuts that cannot be used.
Working out the wall area
The quickest route for a rectangular room is the perimeter times the ceiling height. Add the four wall lengths, multiply by the height, and you have the wall area in one step without measuring each wall separately.
That shortcut breaks down when the ceiling height varies, when a wall is a partial height, or when the room is not a simple rectangle. In those cases enter each wall as its own section, which is what the sections editor is for.
Sloped ceilings and gable ends need splitting into a rectangle and a triangle, using half the base times the height for the triangular part. A room with a vaulted ceiling is several planes rather than one area, and each plane is measured along its slope, not across its footprint.
Why a sheet count is not a cutting plan
Dividing area by sheet area gives the theoretical minimum. It assumes every offcut finds a home somewhere else on the job, which is true for some and not for others.
A long thin strip cut from the top of a wall can often be used above a door. An L-shaped remnant cut around a window usually cannot. The more openings and direction changes a room has, the more of the offcut area is genuinely lost.
That is the main reason the calculated figure and the delivered figure differ, and it is why the allowance is a judgment about the room rather than a fixed percentage. A plain rectangular room needs very little; a stairwell with several angles needs a great deal more.
Sheet size changes the finishing more than the count
Larger sheets always cover the same area with fewer pieces, and the arithmetic makes that obvious. What the arithmetic does not show is the effect on joints, which is usually the bigger consideration.
On an 8 foot wall, a 12 foot sheet run horizontally can cover a 12 foot wall with a single horizontal joint and no butt joints at all. The same wall in 8 foot sheets needs a butt joint every 8 feet, and butt joints are the hardest to finish invisibly because there is no tapered edge to work with.
Against that, longer sheets are heavier and harder to handle in tight spaces, and a sheet that will not fit up a staircase is no use however efficient it looks on paper. The calculator prices whichever size you choose; the handling question is yours.
Common mistakes
Where drywall estimates go wrong:
- Measuring the floor area and using it as the wall area.
- Forgetting the ceiling when it is also being boarded.
- Treating a sloped or vaulted ceiling as its flat footprint.
- Subtracting every small opening while ignoring the offcuts cutting around them creates.
- Choosing a long sheet that will not physically fit into the room.
- Treating the area ratio as a cutting plan in a room full of angles.
- Ordering the exact figure with no allowance at all.

Areas use the standard area formulas, counts divide an area by the size of one unit, and unit conversions use exact factors: 12 inches to a foot, 9 square feet to a square yard, and 100 square feet to a roofing square.

- How many sheets of drywall do I need?
- Add the wall and ceiling areas, then divide by the area of one sheet. A 12 by 14 foot room with an 8 foot ceiling, boarding walls and ceiling, is 584 square feet, which is 19 sheets at 4 by 8 feet.
- How do I calculate drywall for a 12 x 12 room?
- The perimeter is 48 feet, so with an 8 foot ceiling the walls are 384 square feet. Adding a 144 square foot ceiling gives 528 square feet, which is 17 sheets at 4 by 8 feet before any allowance.
- Should I subtract doors and windows?
- Large openings, yes. Small ones are often left in, because cutting drywall around an opening produces offcuts that cannot be reused and roughly cancels the saving. Either approach is defensible if you know which one you used.
- Are longer sheets better?
- They mean fewer pieces and, more usefully, fewer butt joints to tape and finish. Against that they are heavier and may not fit through tight stairwells or doorways. The count favors longer sheets; handling may not.
- How much extra should I allow?
- It depends on the room. A plain rectangle wastes very little. A space with many openings, angles, or a stairwell wastes considerably more, because the offcuts cannot be reused. Judge it from the room and enter your own figure.
- Does this include joint compound and tape?
- No. Those depend on the number and type of joints rather than the sheet count, so they are a separate estimate.
