Measure the length and width of each rectangular section. For a section that widens along its length, such as many aprons, measure the width at both ends and use the average, or enter it as a trapezoid.

Worked example
A driveway with a 40 ft x 12 ft main run, a 16 ft x 10 ft apron, and a 20 ft x 10 ft parking pad, all 5 inches thick

Worked examples
The main run on its own
The 40 ft x 12 ft main run at 5 inches, calculated separately

The main run alone is about 7.41 cubic yards, a little over half the full driveway in this example.
What one inch of thickness costs you
The same 840 square foot driveway at 6 inches instead of 5

One extra inch across this driveway adds 2.6 cubic yards, a 20 percent increase. Thickness is the most sensitive input in a driveway estimate, which is why it should come from your plan rather than a guess.
How to measure driveway sections
The single most useful thing you can do before measuring is sketch the driveway and break it into named parts. Almost every driveway is a main run plus something else, and treating that something else as part of an averaged rectangle is where estimates drift.
Measure the main run first, since it is usually a clean rectangle. Take the width in two or three places, because driveways that look parallel often are not, and use the larger figure or the average.
The apron at the street is the part people most often get wrong. It typically flares outward, making it a trapezoid rather than a rectangle. Measure the width at the street and at the point where it meets the main run, then either average the two widths or enter it as a trapezoid section. Averaging the widths of a trapezoid gives the exact area, so both routes agree.
Curves are approximated well by splitting them. A rounded corner is a rectangle plus a quarter circle; a turnaround is often a rectangle plus a half circle. You do not need to be exact to the inch, but you do need to stop pretending a curve is a straight edge.
Do the measuring with the driveway marked out rather than from a plan, if you can. Driveways are frequently adjusted on site to clear a tree, a utility cover, or a neighbor's boundary, and the version that gets poured is often not the version that was drawn. Walking the marked outline with a tape also tends to surface the sections that were never on the drawing at all, such as the strip beside the garage door or the pad at the gate.
Adding sections before converting
Add every section area together, then apply the thickness and the conversion once. Converting each section to cubic yards separately, rounding each to two decimals, and adding those rounded figures introduces error that grows with the number of sections.
On a three-section driveway the difference is small, but the habit matters on larger jobs and it costs nothing to do it the accurate way. The calculator above totals the area first for exactly this reason.
It also makes checking easier. One total square footage and one thickness is a calculation you can repeat in your head with the divide-by-324 shortcut, which is a useful sanity check against whatever figure comes back from a supplier.
Ordering concrete for a driveway
Driveways are usually large enough that ready-mix delivery is the practical route, and often large enough to need more than one truck. That makes scheduling part of the job rather than an afterthought: the sequence in which trucks arrive determines whether the pour stays continuous.
How a driveway can be broken into pours, and whether joints between them are acceptable, is a question for whoever is designing or placing it. It is not an arithmetic question, and the volume figure here does not answer it.
What the calculator does give you is the number to take into that conversation. Bring the total cubic yards, the section breakdown, and the thickness you are working to, and let the supplier advise on load sizes, increments, and scheduling. - Total cubic yards from your own measurements, plus whatever allowance you have chosen.
- The thickness you are working to, taken from your plan rather than assumed.
- The mix your project calls for, confirmed with whoever specified it.
- Whether the pour must be continuous, and how many loads that implies.
- Access for the truck, including overhead clearance, turning space, and how far the chute has to reach.
- The supplier's order increments and how partial loads are handled.
- Who is placing and finishing, and whether they will be ready when the concrete arrives.
Common mistakes
Where driveway estimates go wrong:
- Treating the whole driveway as one rectangle and ignoring the apron.
- Measuring the apron at its narrowest point rather than averaging the two widths.
- Using the width at one end of a run that is not actually parallel.
- Converting each section separately and adding the rounded results.
- Entering a thickness copied from another project instead of the one specified for this one.
- Forgetting a walkway or landing that is being poured at the same time.
- Ordering the bare geometric figure with no allowance for subgrade variation across a large area.
