Formula

Estimated total = (quantity x your unit price) + delivery + other fixed fees

Quantity is cubic yards for ready-mix, or whole bags for bagged concrete. The calculator never supplies a unit price.

Worked example

A 350 square foot slab at 6 inches, priced as ready-mix at a quoted $165 per cubic yard with a $95 delivery fee

  1. 1Find the volume: 350 x 6 / 324 = 6.48 cubic yards.
  2. 2Material subtotal: 6.48 x $165 = $1,069.20.
  3. 3Add the delivery fee: $1,069.20 + $95 = $1,164.20.
  4. 4Effective delivered rate: $1,164.20 / 6.48 = $179.66 per cubic yard.

The estimated total is $1,164.20. The $165 price and $95 fee are the figures entered for this example, not published rates.

Worked examples

The same pour priced in bags

6.48 cubic yards using a 0.6 cubic foot bag yield at $6.25 per bag

On these entered figures the bagged route costs $660.80 more than the ready-mix route, before accounting for the labor of mixing 292 bags.

Why the comparison flips on a small pour

A 0.5 cubic yard pour with the same entered prices and the same $95 delivery fee

  1. 1Ready-mix material: 0.5 x $165 = $82.50.
  2. 2Ready-mix total with the fee: $82.50 + $95 = $177.50.
  3. 3Bags: 0.5 x 27 = 13.5 cubic feet, divided by 0.6 = 22.5, rounded up to 23 bags.
  4. 4Bagged total: 23 x $6.25 = $143.75.

Here the bagged route is $33.75 cheaper on these figures, because the fixed delivery fee is spread across only half a cubic yard. The same prices give opposite answers at different volumes, which is why fees are entered separately.

How concrete cost is calculated

Cost follows volume, so the volume has to be right before the pricing means anything. The calculator works out the cubic yards first, from your measurements or from a figure you supply, and only then applies prices.

From there the arithmetic is deliberately simple. A ready-mix estimate is cubic yards multiplied by the price per cubic yard. A bagged estimate is the whole bag count multiplied by the price per bag. Fixed charges are added on top of whichever subtotal applies.

Keeping those two parts separate is the point. A single total hides whether the number is driven by material or by fees, and those behave very differently as the pour size changes.

Ready-mix pricing inputs

Ready-mix is normally quoted per cubic yard for a specified mix. That price is what goes in the price field, taken from an actual quote rather than an average, because concrete pricing moves with mix design, order size, season, fuel costs, and how far the plant is from the site.

Suppliers often list additional charges separately on a quote. Rather than guessing at what those might be, the calculator gives you a delivery field and an other-fixed-fee field to enter whatever your own quote actually lists. YardCalc does not publish or assume any supplier charge, minimum order quantity, or truck capacity.

It is worth asking a supplier what increments they deliver in and how partial loads are handled, since that can change the quantity you end up paying for. Those terms vary by supplier and are not something a calculator can predict.

Bagged concrete pricing inputs

Bagged pricing needs two numbers: the yield printed on the bag, which converts your volume into a count, and the price of one bag. The calculator rounds the count up before pricing it, because that is what you will actually buy.

Bag pricing is more visible than ready-mix pricing, since it is on a shelf, but it still varies by retailer, by product, and by quantity. Enter the price you can actually get, including any bulk-purchase pricing if that applies to your quantity.

The labor side does not appear in the total. Mixing several hundred bags is substantial work, and on a large pour that effort, plus mixer rental if needed, can outweigh a difference in material price. The calculator prices material only, so weigh the rest yourself.

Delivery and fixed fees

Fixed fees behave differently from material cost, and that difference is the most useful thing this calculator shows. A material subtotal scales with the pour, so doubling the volume doubles it. A fixed fee does not move at all, so its weight per cubic yard falls as the order grows.

The worked examples above show the effect clearly. With identical entered prices, the ready-mix route is cheaper on a 6.48 cubic yard pour and more expensive on a 0.5 cubic yard pour, purely because the same flat fee is spread across very different volumes.

For that reason the calculator lists fees on their own line rather than folding them into the material figure. When you compare two quotes, compare the delivered totals for your actual volume rather than the headline rate per cubic yard.

Common mistakes

Where concrete cost estimates usually go wrong:

  • Comparing a headline rate per cubic yard against a bag shelf price without including the delivery fee in the comparison.
  • Pricing the exact calculated volume rather than the quantity actually ordered after rounding and any allowance.
  • Forgetting that bag counts round up, so the bagged subtotal uses whole bags rather than the exact figure.
  • Treating a material total as a project budget, leaving out formwork, reinforcement, base preparation, and finishing.
  • Using a price found online rather than a current quote for your mix, quantity, and location.
  • Ignoring the labor difference between placing a delivered load and mixing hundreds of bags.

Frequently asked questions

How much does concrete cost per yard?
YardCalc does not publish concrete prices. Ready-mix pricing varies by mix design, order size, season, fuel cost, and distance from the plant, so the only reliable figure is the one your supplier quotes for your job. Enter that price above and the calculator does the arithmetic.
Is bagged concrete cheaper than ready-mix?
It depends on the volume and on your own prices. Because delivery is usually a fixed charge, ready-mix tends to look better as the pour grows and bags tend to look better on very small pours. Enter both sets of figures in compare mode to see which is cheaper for your specific numbers.
Does this include labor and formwork?
No. The calculator estimates material cost only. Formwork, reinforcement, base preparation, placing, finishing, pumping, and labor are not included and can be a large share of a real project budget.
Why are fees entered separately?
Because they behave differently from material cost. A fixed fee does not scale with volume, so it dominates a small order and barely registers on a large one. Showing it separately makes that visible instead of burying it in an average rate.
What volume should I price, the calculated one or the ordered one?
Price the quantity you will actually order, which usually means the calculated volume plus whatever allowance you choose and any rounding your supplier requires. The allowance field lets you price the adjusted figure directly.
Can I price a project I already measured?
Yes. Tick the known-volume box and enter the cubic yards from your own take-off or from the concrete calculator, then add your prices.
