How to use the sand cost calculator calculator
- 1
Size the project
Enter the area and the depth you plan to fill, and an optional waste allowance, to get the cubic yards.
- 2
Enter bulk pricing
Add your bulk price per cubic yard, plus any delivery and fixed fees, for a bulk total.
- 3
Enter bagged pricing
Add a bag volume and a price per bag, plus any delivery and fixed fees, for a bagged total.
- 4
Compare the totals
When both are entered, read each total and the arithmetic difference, then weigh the practical factors before ordering.
Formula
Estimated total = material subtotal + delivery + other fees
Bulk material subtotal is cubic yards times your price per cubic yard. Bagged material subtotal is the whole-bag count times your price per bag. Both add whatever delivery and fixed fees you enter.
Worked example
A 300 square foot area at 2 inches deep, priced at a bulk rate of 40 dollars per cubic yard with a 60 dollar delivery fee.
- 1Cubic yards: 300 x 2 / 324 = 1.85 cubic yards.
- 2Material subtotal: 1.85 x 40 = 74.07 dollars.
- 3Add delivery: 74.07 + 60 = 134.07 dollars.
- 4There is no other fixed fee in this example.
At the entered prices the bulk total is about 134.07 dollars.
Worked examples
Bagged total
The same 1.85 cubic yards bought as 0.5 cubic foot bags at 5 dollars each.
- 1Cubic feet: 1.85 x 27 = 50 cubic feet.
- 2Bags: 50 / 0.5 = 100 bags.
- 3Material subtotal: 100 x 5 = 500 dollars.
At the entered prices the bagged total is about 500 dollars before any fees.
Comparison
The bulk total of 134.07 dollars beside the bagged total of 500 dollars.
- 1Difference: 500 - 134.07 = 365.93 dollars.
- 2In this example the bagged option costs more at the prices entered.
- 3Access, delivery, storage, and quantity can still change the right choice.
At these specific prices the bagged option is 365.93 dollars more, but that is only the arithmetic.
How sand cost is calculated
Cost starts with volume. The calculator sizes the project from your area and depth, adds an optional waste allowance, and produces cubic yards. From there, a bulk total multiplies cubic yards by your price per cubic yard, and a bagged total multiplies the whole-bag count by your price per bag.
Delivery and any fixed fee are added on top of each material subtotal, so the totals reflect the full order rather than just the material. Every input is a number you enter, which keeps the estimate specific to the quotes you have.
Bulk price versus bag price
The two ways to buy sand are priced differently, so line up the inputs before comparing:
| Factor | Bulk sand | Bagged sand |
|---|---|---|
| Priced by | Cubic yard | The bag, sized in cubic feet |
| Typical fit | Larger volumes | Smaller volumes and easy handling |
| Fees to add | Delivery, other fixed fee | Delivery or pickup, other fixed fee |
| What to enter | Price per cubic yard | Bag volume and price per bag |
Delivery and fixed fees
Delivery can be a large part of a small order and a small part of a large one, so entering it separately keeps the comparison fair. A fixed fee covers anything that does not scale with volume, such as a minimum charge or a handling fee.
Enter the fees for each option separately, because bulk delivery and bagged pickup or delivery are rarely the same. The calculator keeps them apart so each total reflects that option's real cost.
Why local prices vary
Sand prices differ by region, supplier, product, season, and order size, so there is no single national price to rely on. That is why the calculator asks for your own numbers rather than assuming a rate.
For the most accurate estimate, gather current quotes for both bulk and bagged options, including delivery, and enter them here. To size the project first, use the sand calculator, and to focus on bag counts use the sand bag calculator.
Getting accurate quotes
To make the comparison reflect your real costs, confirm a few things with each supplier:
- 1The unit each price is quoted in, whether a cubic yard, a ton, or a bag.
- 2Whether delivery is included or added separately, and any minimum order.
- 3The bag volume in cubic feet, so a bagged quote lines up with the volume you need.
- 4Any fixed or handling fee that does not scale with the amount.
Common mistakes
Keep these in mind when estimating sand cost:
- Comparing a bulk price to a bag price without converting to the same project volume
- Leaving delivery out of one option but not the other
- Assuming a price instead of using a current quote
- Forgetting the whole-bag rounding that raises the bagged total
- Treating the arithmetic difference as the only factor in the decision
Area and Depth to Sand Cubic Yards
Cubic yards to price for each area and depth. Multiply the cubic yards by your own bulk price, or convert to bags for a bagged total.
| Area | 1 in | 2 in | 3 in | 4 in | 6 in |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 sq ft | 0.154 | 0.309 | 0.463 | 0.617 | 0.926 |
| 100 sq ft | 0.309 | 0.617 | 0.926 | 1.23 | 1.85 |
| 200 sq ft | 0.617 | 1.23 | 1.85 | 2.47 | 3.7 |
| 300 sq ft | 0.926 | 1.85 | 2.78 | 3.7 | 5.56 |
| 500 sq ft | 1.54 | 3.09 | 4.63 | 6.17 | 9.26 |
| 750 sq ft | 2.31 | 4.63 | 6.94 | 9.26 | 13.89 |
| 1,000 sq ft | 3.09 | 6.17 | 9.26 | 12.35 | 18.52 |
Whole Bags Needed by Project Size
Whole bags to buy for each project size and bag volume, already rounded up, so you can multiply by your own price per bag.
| Bag volume | 0.5 yd | 1 yd | 2 yd | 3 yd | 5 yd |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 cu ft | 27 | 54 | 108 | 162 | 270 |
| 0.75 cu ft | 18 | 36 | 72 | 108 | 180 |
| 1 cu ft | 14 | 27 | 54 | 81 | 135 |
| 1.5 cu ft | 9 | 18 | 36 | 54 | 90 |
| 2 cu ft | 7 | 14 | 27 | 41 | 68 |
| 3 cu ft | 5 | 9 | 18 | 27 | 45 |
Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate the cost of sand?
- Size the project in cubic yards, then multiply by your bulk price per cubic yard, or divide into bags and multiply by your price per bag. Add delivery and any fixed fee for the full total.
- Is bulk sand cheaper than bagged sand?
- Not always. It depends on the prices you are quoted, the project size, delivery, storage, and handling. Enter both options here to see the arithmetic difference, then weigh the practical factors.
- How much does sand delivery cost?
- Delivery varies by supplier, distance, and order size, so the calculator asks you to enter it rather than assuming a figure. Add it separately for bulk and bagged so the comparison stays fair.
- Why does the bagged total include rounding?
- Because you buy whole bags, the calculator rounds the bag count up before multiplying by your price. That makes the bagged total reflect what you would actually purchase.
- Can I compare bulk and bagged at the same time?
- Yes. Enter a bulk price and a bag volume with a bag price, and the calculator shows both totals and the difference between them.
- Why does the calculator not show a sand price?
- Sand prices vary too much by region, supplier, and product to assume one. Using your own current quotes keeps the estimate accurate for your project.
Cost uses only the prices and fees you enter. Bulk totals multiply cubic yards by your price per cubic yard; bagged totals multiply the rounded-up bag count by your price per bag; both add your delivery and fixed fees. The difference is plain arithmetic and implies no recommendation. See the YardCalc calculation methodology.
