Rolls = area(sq ft) / ((roll width(ft) x (1 - overlap%)) x roll length(ft))
Overlap reduces the usable width of each strip. Round the result up, since fabric is sold by the roll.
Worked example
A 500 square foot bed covered with 3 foot by 50 foot rolls at a 10 percent overlap

- 3Effective coverage: 2.7 x 50 = 135 square feet.

The bed takes 4 rolls at that size and overlap. Without any overlap the same bed would need 3.33 rolls, which still rounds up to 4.
Worked examples
Why roll width changes the overlap penalty
The same 500 square feet in 4 foot by 100 foot rolls at the same 10 percent overlap
- 1Effective width: 4 x 0.90 = 3.6 ft.
- 2Effective coverage: 3.6 x 100 = 360 square feet.
- 3Rolls: 500 / 360 = 1.39, which rounds up to 2.
- 4Coverage bought: 2 x 360 = 720 square feet.
Two wide rolls cover the bed, but with a lot of surplus. Fewer, larger rolls mean fewer seams and less overlap waste, at the cost of buying coverage you may not use.
What the overlap actually costs
The same 3 by 50 foot roll at 0, 10, and 20 percent overlap
- 1No overlap: coverage 150 sq ft, so 500 / 150 = 3.33 rolls.
- 210 percent overlap: coverage 135 sq ft, so 3.70 rolls.
- 320 percent overlap: coverage 120 sq ft, so 4.17 rolls, rounding to 5.
- 4The 20 percent case needs a whole extra roll over the 10 percent case.
Overlap is not a rounding detail. Going from 10 to 20 percent adds a roll here, because it removes a fifth of every strip's usable width.
Why overlap applies to the width, not the area
It is tempting to treat overlap as a simple percentage added to the area, but that is not how laying strips works. Each strip loses a band along one edge to the strip beside it, so what shrinks is the usable width of the roll, not the total area you are covering.
The difference matters because the penalty depends on how wide the roll is. A 6 inch lap on a 3 foot roll removes a sixth of its usable width. The same 6 inch lap on a 6 foot roll removes only a twelfth. Expressed as a percentage of width, the arithmetic handles both correctly.
The calculator shows the effective width and the effective coverage separately from the nominal roll area, so you can see exactly what the overlap is costing before deciding whether to change the roll size.
Trade-offs between roll sizes
Wider rolls are more efficient in two ways: they lose less proportionally to overlap, and they need fewer seams, which is where weeds tend to come through.
Against that, a wide roll is heavier and harder to handle alone, and it is more wasteful in a narrow or awkwardly shaped bed where much of the width gets trimmed off. A 6 foot roll in a 3 foot wide border wastes half of every run.
The other factor is rounding. Fabric is sold by the roll, so a large roll that only just fails to cover the area forces you to buy a second one and leaves substantial surplus. The worked examples above show a case where two wide rolls provide 720 square feet for a 500 square foot bed.
Where fabric is used, and what this does not decide
Landscape fabric turns up in several distinct roles: as a weed barrier under mulch or decorative stone, as a separator between soil and aggregate under hardscape, and as a filter layer under drainage stone or riprap.
Those are genuinely different jobs with different material requirements, and the fabric suited to one is not necessarily right for another. A lightweight weed barrier and a woven geotextile used for separation under a driveway are not interchangeable.
This calculator counts rolls of whatever fabric you specify. Which type to use, whether fabric is appropriate at all in a given situation, and how it should be secured and lapped are specification and installation questions. Take them from your plan, the manufacturer's guidance, or your contractor.
Common mistakes
Where fabric estimates go wrong:
- Adding overlap to the total area instead of taking it off the roll width.
- Using a roll size from memory rather than the product being bought.
- Choosing a wide roll for a narrow border, where most of the width is trimmed off.
- Forgetting that fabric is sold by the roll, so the order rounds up to a whole roll.
- Leaving out a waste allowance in a heavily planted bed, where trimming around plants wastes a lot.
- Assuming one fabric type suits weed control, separation, and drainage filtering alike.
- Measuring an irregular bed as one averaged rectangle.

Every figure on this page comes from geometry, not from a product or materials database. Areas use the standard area formulas, volumes are area multiplied by depth, cylinders use pi times the radius squared times the height, and unit conversions use exact factors: 12 inches to a foot, 27 cubic feet to a cubic yard, and 9 square feet to a square yard.
YardCalc publishes no material density, coverage rate, product dimension, soil swell factor, compaction factor, or price. Those vary by product, by supplier, by soil, and by region, and a figure that is right in one case is wrong in another, so the calculator asks you for the values that apply to your job.
